John and Shirley Davison filed the following report:

July 13, 2010, a poverty simulation seminar was held at Winebrenner Seminary and was designed to show the barriers encountered by people facing poverty. As participants my wife and I arrived and were each assigned a role in different families in the throes of poverty.  My family was a single mom with only $10, abandoned by her husband and left with a teenage daughter struggling in school and a teenage son a high school drop-out with a pregnant girlfriend. He had no job and his friends were trying to get him to sell drugs.

The problem facing them was tremendous. Money for food, rent and utilities, etc. was the main focus.  They began to ask for help but before help was received they were evicted and now homeless. People like this face many barriers as they try to work their way out of their hopeless situation!

This was a learning experience for the people not in poverty. The class was designed to raise awareness and hopefully make it easier to understand what people face trying to get the help they need, such as education, jobs, or assistance. Many organizations were represented, United Way, Community Action Commission, etc. so people could be made aware of the help available in Findlay and the Hancock County area.

Homework Central wants YOU !

One of the ways Parkview makes an impact on the Findlay community is through an organization called Homework Central.  The focus of Homework Central is to help students from Lincoln Elementary School excel at academics through one on one tutoring.  The program not only allows the students positive reinforcement from their tutor but also allows them to explore other areas of interest through the guest speakers and activity programs.  Parkview members that have lent their time and talent as tutors include Allison Harper, Nicole Lang, Robyn Enders, Bonnie Riley, and Chuck Riley.  Chuck is presently serving as Chairman of the Board for the organization.

With a new school year only a few months away, Homework Central is looking for more tutors.  If you would be available and willing to help on Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 pm until 5:00 pm please contact Chuck at 419-424-2059 or Connie Ferguson at 419-408-1460.
